90 Years!

In the fall of 1936 my great-grandfather, the late Vernon H. Powell, opened his first shoe store in Downtown Salisbury where the current city and county government building stands today. Little did he know his dream would have such an impact on the communities of Delmarva. For 90 years Vernon Powell Shoe Company has strived to provide quality name-brand footwear combined with professional service. Today we’re in our 4th generation of leadership with the fifth generation learning the business. Our family is tremendously grateful and honored for the support YOU, our loyal customers, have given us through the years. Our business has certainly evolved since its beginning. Initially, Vernon Powell only carried dress shoes as most of the population dressed for all occasions. In the late 1960’s we added athletic shoes to the mix. By the late 70’s tennis shoes, tennis apparel, and running shoes were fueling our growth. Next, we expanded to the “Old” Salisbury Mall, to Easton, and to the beaches. When the Centre at Salisbury opened in the early 90’s we had 20 locations throughout Delmarva. With the invention of internet shopping we were forced to close our outlying locations and in 2000 we decided a larger “super store” concept was the best path forward. Our 20,000 square foot location was such a success we expanded it 7 years later. We added additional apparel and accessories including jewelry, and eventually workwear. Today, our product mix combined with our professional customer service creates a shopping experience unlike any other in our industry. Our team works hard everyday to find new brands, the latest technologies, and additional tools to provide you with the best possible shopping experience. Once again, they have our stores loaded with exciting new fall merchandise to get you ready for the season.
